Jacksonville City Facts
Jacksonville is one of Florida's most historic communities. Settled in 1816 and named for Andrew Jackson, the first territorial governor of Florida, the city was laid out in 1822.
Jacksonville is the largest city in the contiguous United States in land area, a major port, the insurance and financial center of the state, site of U.S. Navy bases and the home of the National Football League's Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jacksonville’s beginning dates back to an early 1800’s settlement, called Cowford because cattle crossed the St. John’s River here. The name was changed to Jacksonville in 1882 in honor of General Andrew Jackson, the provisional governor who had forced Spain to surrender Florida to the United States two years earlier.
